  • Cloudy skies, Sunsets, or Geese

This afternoon study got me thinking about focal points, how so many things are around us but not everything gets the attention. As I pulled out a new paper to give it serious rendering, I thought about how painting a picture organizes life to help the best things get noticed.

  • Another Great Day of Art Camp

Middle school art camp made sculptures today. We had a terrific time, especially when they were telling outrageous back-stories about how their created characters acquired their interesting abnormalities. “Expecting perfect clay sculptures on the first day is incredibly inconsiderate of the artists who have spent 40 years learning how to master the art.” Dancing dudes.…

  • Postcards from Maine on Display in August

I am showing my postcard paintings and other watercolors from nature at the Lakes Region Library of Inverness, Florida for the month of August. This show has many plein aire pieces from our summer visit to family in Maine. Some of the paintings were sent to Florida friends and borrowed back for the show. Anyone…

  • Nature Journal Curriculum

This time of year most teachers are evaluating and adapting their curriculums for next year.   I am really excited about videos from John Muir Laws for my own plein air painting and sketchbook journaling, and this led me to a free resource from CNPS.  Law’s naturalist expertise is evident in this free curriculum from…

  • Screens and Stencils for Little Ones

This week we tried modified screen printing in kindergarten and first grade. We made some modifications to help the littles understand the process better, so this is more of an introduction to stencils not actual screen printing. 1.) The children fold a half sheet of paper in half.  They can cut shapes out of the…

  • Archaeology Artifacts

We had fun making fake artifacts for K-5 adventure camp.  The library books accompany the displays. At our simulated dig the campers charted the objects before taking them to the “research” section to find them in these books. Then they placed them on our “museum” tables with companion pieces. Use the contact page to email…

  • Chalk Painting

I just found out that my chalk pastels are water soluble. Experimenting with a few simple doodles is a fun way to try it out. The results resemble tempera paints. Today feels like a good day for sketching with chalks then trying out some wet blending.

  • A visit from MOT

Our students were honored by a visit from master artist MOT. We enjoyed seeing his work, learning about his multilayered painting process – wow! steady hands! And then we tried making our own logo style designs. MOT-ZOO mot zoo is a fine art collection of animal designs created by artist mot A.K.A. Tom Sawyer –…

  • Day 2 – Galaxy of Color
